Roundabout decision threatens to bring conflict

Tuesday, 30th July 2019

• WHEN the “consultation” was taking place between Transport for London and Islington Council prior to the reordering of Highbury Corner roundabout it was pointed out by many that cyclists heading north might find it easier to cycle across the concourse rather than traverse the roundabout by the prescribed cycle lane.

Claiming that they knew better, the planners immediately dismissed the suggestion. Yet now, to enable work to continue on the verge of the roundabout, a temporary cycle lane has been created right across the concourse.

This could create a precedent as when the work is completed it might prove difficult to get cyclists to revert to the route originally intended. Watch this space! I suspect it could quickly lead to conflict between pedestrians and cyclists.
